A generator is an important source of backup power when the main electricity supply is unavailable. However, manually starting and stopping a generator can require regular attention. At Selfguard Automation and Controls, we offer a practical solution through our Generator Auto Start Auto Stop Unit with Remote (GSU-2), designed to provide automatic and remote generator control.

One common question is whether an auto start-stop unit can be installed without replacing the existing generator control panel. The answer depends on the generator's starting system and the type of controller installed. Our GSU-2 is available in four different models to accommodate different generator connections.

Understanding the Selfguard GSU-2

At Selfguard, we manufacture the GSU-2 for self-start generators, with different models designed for specific starting systems and controllers. All four models offer the same working functions, while their compatibility and connections differ.

Our available models include:

  • For All Key Start: Designed for generators that start with a key or push button.
  • For Procom: Designed for generators equipped with Procom controllers.
  • For Cummins: Compatible with Cummins, Sudhir and Jakson generators that use key or push-button starting.
  • For Controller: Designed for generators fitted with KG934, Deep Sea, PSO 500 or SEDEMAC controllers.

This model-specific approach helps customers identify the appropriate unit for their existing generator configuration.

Is Replacing the Existing Control Panel Necessary?

Our GSU-2 product range is designed around different generator starting systems and controller connections. Therefore, replacing the entire control panel should not automatically be considered necessary simply because you want automatic start-stop functionality.

However, our product information does not state that every existing control panel can be retained without modification. Compatibility depends on the generator's starting arrangement and the controller it uses.

Before selecting a model, identify whether your generator uses a key or push-button starting system, a Procom controller, or one of the supported controllers listed for our controller-specific model.

We provide a product brochure and connection diagram for each GSU-2 variant to help identify the appropriate configuration.

How Does Our Auto Start-Stop Unit Work?

Our GSU-2 offers three operating functions: remote start and remote stop, remote start with automatic stop, and automatic start with automatic stop.

In Auto mode, the generator starts automatically when the main electricity supply is absent. When the main supply returns, the generator stops automatically.

In Manual mode, the generator can be started using the green start button on the main unit or remote unit. It can be stopped using the red stop button on either unit while the main supply is absent. If it has not been stopped manually, the generator will stop automatically when the main supply returns.

The unit also stops the generator automatically when the main supply is present, regardless of whether Auto or Manual mode is selected.

Remote Operation Without Compromising Generator Safety

Our GSU-2 includes a remote unit that allows users to start and stop the generator and change between Auto and Manual modes remotely.

The remote unit operates through a four-core wire with a thickness of 0.5 mm, allowing operation over an unlimited distance when using the specified wired connection.

We have also included an important safety feature: the GSU-2 does not bypass the generator's safety features.

Choose the Right Model for Your Generator

At Selfguard Automation and Controls, we have been manufacturing electrical and electronic products related to mains, generator and agricultural automation since 1990. We use microcontroller technology and aim to provide quality products according to customer requirements.

If you want to add automatic start-stop and remote operation to your generator, explore our four GSU-2 models before deciding whether your existing control panel needs replacement.
